This is a great article from theSan Diego Union Tribune in which their food critic attempts to determine why the world's largest coffee chain can't supply a decent pastry.
I laughed out loud when I read this article. My husband and I have had unpleasant experiences with their pastries in Atlanta, Boston, Pittsburgh, Columbia (SC), Washington, D.C., and Charlotte (NC). We've joked about buying their delicious brewed coffee and then sauntering over to Panera for a muffin to go with it. :) http://musesofmegret.blogspot.com
They used to carry these lemon "scones" at the chains in Southern California. Not exactly scones, not exactly muffins, but rockin' good icing. I shamelessly ate the icing and tossed the rest. They don't even carry those anymore.
